Are there any obvious visual differences between the UH-1D and a UH-1H? I thought I would ask you guys because the reference manuals don't really explain it in plain English. I'm working on a small project and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Bob-
Don't want to step on any crew chief toes here, they can be more specific than I can, but the reference I always used is that externally, the D model had the pitot tube on the nose while the H has it on the roof. Also, most, if not all the D models, I think, had the dual antennas sticking off the nose like probes. The H was sans nose antennas. What else, guys???

If I recall correctly the H model had a more powerful turbine. |

Bob, Phil and Pancho, UH-1D had a T53-L9, T-53-L9A, T53-L11, T53-L11A or T53-L11B Lycoming Turbine Engine. It is true that originally the UH-1D had a nose mounted Pitot Tube and FM Homing Antennas.
UH-1H and UH-1V(later medevac models) had a T53-L13, T53-L13A or T53-L13B Lycoming Turbine Engine. The manufactured UH-1H model had the roof mounted Pitot Tube.
Eventually, all UH-1D models were modified to UH-1H specifications by installing the T53-L13 engine (but the nose mounted pitot tube remained unchanged)
UH-1H and UH-1V aircraft remain actively supporting the Army's National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, CA and the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, LA. These birds support "in the box" training and medical evacuation missions. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, private Mullen (Dust Off 708A) |

Well he's right! The "D" model had the L-11 turbine and the "H" model had the L-13 Turbine. Thanks for the memory test! |

OK guys, here is the skinny on the "D" vs. "H" model. The "D" model had a few facial features but some early "H" models also had the same. Several "D" model were retro fitted into "H" models. The main difference was the engine up grade. The "D" model had the T53L13 turbine engine while the "H" model had the more powerful T53L13-A engine. Pancho was right on as usual! |
